... I did. He didn't know who I was- and I didn't know who he was, at the time. If he did recognize me, he kept it on the downlow real good.

... I never met him for long. But he acted pretty strange, and seemed like he had emotions of some kind. He was surprised when Ansem told him to stop doin' the experiments, but... I can't remember much of him beyond that. He seemed pretty calm and composed.

... That's the last thing I really remember before this place. I couldn't fully remove his heart from my body, so with Aqua's help, I tried something else.

But it explains a lot. Why he was tryin' to find Ven again, in Castle Oblivion. Why he didn't recognize me... probably why it took him so long to get started as well.
